Today in class we performed our little group thingo’s from what we developed from picking apart the stimulus. We were meant to incorporate song but our group kinda struggled a little bit with that and it didn’t quite really get in there. Some parts we performed were fair good like our timing, movement and synchronisation, whereas some parts lacked like aspects of character conviction and the lack of song. Our groups working well together but there there is a little bit like everyone fully doesnt wanna put their ideas out there in case they get shut down, but eventually we’ll feel more comfortable with each other and that will go away. Anyways, now Clarry asks us how this sorta stuff fits into the ensemble topic…
“we’re looking at how music that carried social and political messages different to the norms of the time influenced popular culture, beleifs, values and changed society for good” - Quote Clazza’s Blog
From the peeps i said in my earlier blog, a song of Stevie Wonder popped into my head today. Most ppl have heard the song ‘Ebony and Ivory’ and it’s basically about the two races of black and white people living together in harmony. Also from that other blog i mentioned Ray Charles, and i’ve seen the movie made about his life called ‘Ray.’ At the time Ray was big in music there was still some forms of black segregation in the public, yet this black man was a big hit on the music scene. I guess wat i’m tryin to say is that for the african american society there was no way of expressing themself in normal society so they chose to express themselves through music, and through this helped change society’s view towards their race. This could also be seen in the gospel choirs in the african american churches of the time…
This is only one example of many that shows the power of music. It’s power to bring together people against any opposition proves its power. The segregated african-american community could go to church and sing their blues away while their famous racial counterparts were trying to change society’s view of them through their widely heard music. I’ve rambled on a bit, but i hope it all makes sense…
